Mieczysław Weinberg was a Polish-born composer, born in 1919, in Warsaw, Poland. He fled to the Soviet Union in 1939 to escape the Nazis during World War II. In the USSR, Weinberg became close friends with Dmitri Shostakovich, who supported and influenced his music. His music combines deep emotion, folk influences, and powerful expressions of trauma and resilience. Despite political challenges and a period of imprisonment in 1953, he continued to compose throughout his life. His work was underappreciated during his lifetime but has gained significant recognition in recent years.
